The Kumite Challenge

The Kumite Challenge is a series of drills we have compiled that will test your abilities as a handgun shooter. This is all time based, and there are penalties for missing your target. Remember, only shoot as fast as you can shoot safely and accurately…Accuracy beats speed! The targets used for this drill are the NRA B8 Target, and a standard IDPA Target. The 6 stages are as follows:

1. The Triple 2 Drill: 3 IDPA Targets are placed 1 yard apart. From the 5 yard line, shooter will draw and fire 2 rounds on each target. If the shooter misses the -0 (A-Zone), a 1 second penalty per miss will be added to the raw time.

  • The instructor standard for this drill is 4.5 seconds.
  • Best time for any student/instructor in this class is 2.08 (Morgan)

2. Quick on the Draw: B8 target. From the 3 yard line, shooter will draw and fire 1 round. Round must be in the X-ring or 10-ring. Any shot in the 9 ring is a 1 second penalty. Any shot outside the 9 ring is a 3 second penalty.

  • Best time for any student/instructor on this course is .92 (Darche)
  • The instructor standard from this drill is 2 seconds.

3. The 5-5 drill: B8 Target. From 5 yards, shooter will fire 5 rounds from the low ready, compressed ready, or high ready position. Any round outside the 9 ring is a 3 second penalty.

4. The Devils Drill: 666 (6 yards, 6 shots, in 6 seconds) on a B8 Target. Shooter will prepare gun with 5 rounds (1 in chamber and 4 in magazine) and have a spare loaded magazine on his belt. From 6 yards, the shooter will draw and fire 6 rounds. The 5th round will induce a slide lock reload, so the shooter must reload quickly and efficiently to keep the time low. Any shot outside the 9 ring is a 3 second penalty.

  • The instructor standard for this drill is 6 seconds.
  • Best time for any student/instructor on this course is 3.79 (Morgan)

  • The instructor standard for this drill is 10 seconds.
  • Best time for any student/instructor on this course is 4.75 (Morgan)

6. 25 Yard Accuracy Test: IDPA Target will be placed at 25 yards. Shooter will have 3 minutes to shoot 30 rounds. Any round outside the A-Zone is a 1 second penalty. This drill includes 100% round accountability, there must be 30 rounds visible on the target.

Once stages 1 through 5 are complete, add your times up. Once the 6th stage is complete, add any penalties from the 6th stage to the total time and that is your score. Presently , lead instructor Joe Morgan has the best overall combined time at 16.71 seconds.
